Italy is the cleanest country in the world?

Salience of climate issues in international coverage

Zurich, July 10, 2008: Italy and Japan garnered no negative news in regards to climate change over the last 12 months, with 20% of all reports about Italy lauding the country - albeit on a very low level of reporting, according to a study released today by media analysis institute Media Tenor International.

The study, tracking 26,779 reports in 30 networks internationally, including Fox, BBC and TF1 from April 2007 to the end of May 2008, found that, while the US is by far the most talked about country when it comes to this hot issue, it receives relatively balanced coverage, much like Germany. Russia is seen as the worse by far, with 60% of news stories being negative, with the UK fairing only slightly better with a 40% figure.

German news, with their government's prominent opposition to cleaner Italy's nuclear plans, cares most about the climate change issue. Not only do they cover climate change more than in other G8 country, but that difference is exacerbated when it comes to domestic coverage. The Germans care about what they can do at home to make a difference, while the Italians are much more keen towards impeccable PR.
